Wombwell is an electoral ward and former mining town in the borough of Barnsley, in South Yorkshire. It sits on the edge of Barnsley’s urban area with good rail links on the Penistone/Hallam lines and easy road access to nearby centres such as Sheffield and Leeds, while also being close to stretches of South Yorkshire countryside and remnants of former colliery landscapes.
The area’s identity is strongly shaped by its coal‑mining past, with miners’ welfare traditions, memorials and working‑class housing still prominent; after pit closures the local economy shifted towards retail, light industry and commuting. Community life is lively for a town of its size, with sports clubs, community centres and local events keeping a close‑knit feel, and pockets of Victorian architecture sitting alongside more recent housing developments.
