Small Heath

The Small Heath electoral ward sits to the east of Birmingham, England, a compact urban neighbourhood centred around Victorian terraced streets, pockets of social housing and green space such as Small Heath Park. It has a lively multicultural character - notably large Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities - reflected in independent shops, halal butchers and South Asian restaurants along the local high streets, and good public-transport links into the city centre.

Small Heath grew up in the 19th century to house workers in nearby manufacturing and engineering industries and still shows that industrial heritage in its street pattern and former works. It also has a curious place in football history, since the team that became Birmingham City began life locally as Small Heath Alliance. In recent years the ward has seen targeted regeneration and continues to balance local economic pressures with a strong community spirit.
