South Portslade is a mainly residential ward on the western edge of Brighton and Hove, sitting between the city centre and the industrial and harbour area around Shoreham Harbour. The neighbourhood benefits from good transport links, including Portslade railway station and the nearby A27, and feels tucked between the urban coast and the more rural rise towards the South Downs.
Historically the area grew from a small village and was transformed by Victorian railway and industrial development, so today you find a mix of terraces, council housing and pockets of newer flats alongside light industry and local shops. There’s a strong local community spirit centred on the village green and parish landmarks such as Portslade Village and St Nicolas Church, with many residents commuting into central Brighton while small businesses and port-related trades still shape the local economy.
