Bartlow is a small, mainly agricultural parish in South Cambridgeshire, close to the county boundary with Essex and a few miles from the market towns of Linton and Haverhill. It retains a very rural character of arable fields, narrow lanes and a tiny, close‑knit community, with many residents commuting to larger centres such as Cambridge for work and services.
Its most striking feature is the group of ancient Roman burial mounds known as the Bartlow Hills, among the largest tumuli in Britain; 19th‑century excavations revealed sarcophagi and other finds that mark the parish as an important archaeological site. The village also has a small historic parish church and traces of former local transport links, and while quiet today it attracts interest from walkers, history enthusiasts and local school groups.
