Chilton is a small town and electoral ward in County Durham, in the north‑east of England, lying close to Spennymoor and within easy commuting distance of Durham and Bishop Auckland. Set on the gentle foothills of the Pennines, it grew up around coal mining in the 19th and 20th centuries and still shows that industrial legacy in its terraced streets and former pit sites.
Today Chilton has a mix of long‑standing community institutions - churches, schools and social clubs - alongside newer housing and local shops, with the local economy shifting from mining to retail, light industry and commuting; there have been ongoing regeneration efforts to improve green spaces and reuse former industrial land, and the area retains a strong sense of community rooted in its mining past.
