Burnhope is a small former mining village in County Durham, in the North East of England, set against rolling upland countryside and within easy reach of moorland and reservoir walking country. Its position on the old Durham coalfield gives it a quietly rugged feel, with lanes, stone terraces and occasional reminders of the industrial past dotted among greener fields.
Historically the community expanded with 19th- and 20th-century pit work, and after the collieries closed the village became more residential and commuter-oriented while keeping a strong local identity; a village hall, pub and community events help maintain social life. Visitors will notice the mining-era architecture and local pride in heritage, even as residents increasingly look to nearby towns for shops and services.
