The civil parish of Sacriston in County Durham lies a few miles north of Durham, on the fringe of the old Durham Coalfield. The settlement’s name reflects a medieval link to the sacrist of Durham Cathedral, and the village is characterised by a mix of miners’ terraces and later housing set against farmland and riverside walks along the River Browney.
Much of the local identity was shaped by coal mining and the social institutions that grew up around the pits; after closures in the late 20th century the area has become largely residential with active community groups, a primary school and small businesses, while reclaimed colliery sites and memorials preserve the industrial heritage alongside countryside recreation and commuter links into Durham and beyond.
