Shotton Colliery in County Durham is a compact former coal‑mining village that grew up around the local pit and its associated terraces and community buildings. It sits close to Peterlee and is a short drive from the Durham coast around Seaham and the city of Durham, so it combines a semi‑rural setting with easy links to larger towns.
The village still carries a strong mining legacy in its social life and built environment, with local clubs, memorials and a sense of shared history among long‑standing families. Like many former pit villages it faced economic challenges after colliery closures, and in recent years has seen modest regeneration and a shift towards commuting, light industry and community‑led projects to sustain local services and identity.
