Wheatley Hill is a village in County Durham, England, situated in the eastern part of the county a few miles from the former coalfield towns and close to communities such as Peterlee and the Durham coast around Seaham. The landscape is typical gentle lowland of the Durham coalfield, with patches of reclaimed green space where collieries once stood and easy links to neighbouring villages like Trimdon and Wingate.
Historically the village grew up around coal mining and that industrial past still shapes local identity, from memorials to miners to community institutions born out of the pit-era. Since pit closures the area has seen regeneration efforts and retains a strong community spirit, with local clubs, churches and volunteer projects playing a big role in social life alongside quieter residential and semi-rural living.
