Startforth is a small rural parish in County Durham, set on the north bank of the River Tees just east of Barnard Castle in upper Teesdale. Its riverside setting, a historic stone bridge over the Tees and easy access to popular walking routes give it a strong outdoorsy, scenic character despite being only a short drive from the market town.
Historically the area was part of the North Riding of Yorkshire until local government changes in the 1970s; today the local economy remains largely agricultural with many residents commuting to nearby towns. The parish has a compact, community-focused feel with a village hall, local amenities and the pull of Barnard Castle (and attractions such as the Bowes Museum) bringing occasional tourism and events to the locality.
