Tow Law is a small former industrial town and electoral ward in County Durham, set on high moorland at the edge of the North Pennines. It grew up in the 19th century around ironworks and coal mining, and although heavy industry has long gone the streets and surviving buildings still hint at that industrial past while the surrounding open moorland gives the area dramatic, windswept scenery.
The community mixes a strong local identity with a largely residential character: there are village halls, grassroots sport and social clubs, and many people commute to larger towns for work. The ward’s location makes it popular with walkers and riders and gives it a distinctive feel where industrial heritage sits alongside rural living.
