Witton Gilbert sits in County Durham, a short distance north of Durham and close to Chester-le-Street, straddling the valley of the River Browney. The village combines stone-built houses, farmland and pockets of woodland, with walks and lanes that give a distinctly rural feel despite the convenient links to the city.
With medieval origins centred on its parish church, the settlement later expanded during the coal-mining era and still carries reminders of that industrial past alongside several listed buildings. Today it has an active community life - local clubs, a school and village amenities - and benefits from being near attractions such as the Beamish Museum while retaining much of its traditional character.
