Millom sits in the historic county of Cumberland on the southern edge of the Lake District, beside the sweeping saltmarshes of the Duddon Estuary. The landscape is dominated by the distinctive fell Black Combe, and the area is served by the coastal railway, giving easy links along the Cumbrian coast.
Built up in the 19th century around iron ore mining and smelting, Millom still bears traces of that industrial past while places such as Hodbarrow have been reclaimed as important wildlife habitat. Today the local economy mixes services, small industry and tourism, with a strong community life, heritage interests and good opportunities for walking, birdwatching and outdoor recreation; many people also commute to nearby Barrow-in-Furness.
