The inland port town of Goole sits in the East Riding of Yorkshire on the banks of the River Ouse, where the canalised Aire and Calder Navigation meets the estuarine reach of the Humber. Founded as a planned Victorian port in the early 19th century, its docks, warehouse-lined streets and red-brick terraces still speak of that industrial origin and the era of canal and steam transport.
Today Goole remains one of Britain’s busiest inland ports, handling freight and logistics alongside light industry, while rail links to Hull and Doncaster keep it well connected regionally. The town retains a strong maritime identity, with a local museum and community events, and offers an intriguing contrast between its industrial heritage and the surrounding reclaimed marshland and estuarine habitats of the Humber estuary.
