Goldhanger is a small village and civil parish in the district of Maldon, in rural Essex, sitting on the north shore of the Blackwater estuary. The village is defined by tidal creeks, salt marshes and mudflats that give it a distinctly coastal, agricultural feel and make it popular with birdwatchers, walkers and small-boat sailors.
There is a visible sense of history in the compact settlement - surviving timber and brick cottages, a parish church and a tiny quay hint at its long coastal past - while the local economy mixes farming and estuarine activities with leisure and tourism. The surrounding marshes are part of the important Blackwater estuary environment, valued for wintering wildfowl and waders, and community life centres on the village hall and occasional local events rather than heavy industry.
