The civil parish covers the low-lying marsh village of Cliffe and the higher-ground, largely residential Cliffe Woods on the western edge of the Hoo Peninsula in Medway, overlooking the Thames Estuary. The landscape is dominated by saltmarsh and reclaimed gravel workings such as Cliffe Pools, which have become valuable wetland habitat and attract birdwatchers and conservation interest.
Historically the area was shaped by river industries - brick, cement and dock-related works - and by 19th-century river defences, so Cliffe still carries a gritty industrial flavour while Cliffe Woods feels more like a commuter and family village with local clubs, shops and green corridors. The mix of wildlife-rich marshes, visible industrial heritage and periodic development pressures on the Hoo Peninsula gives the communities a distinctive character balancing quiet village life with conservation concerns and reminders of their maritime past.
