Grain is a small village at the tip of the Hoo Peninsula in Medway, where the River Medway flows into the Thames Estuary. Its low-lying position has long made it strategically important: coastal forts and WWII defences once guarded the approach to the river, and later industrial developments such as power stations and maritime terminals shaped the shoreline and local economy.
Nowadays Grain combines that industrial legacy with stretches of saltmarsh and reclaimed land, making it a surprisingly quiet spot for birdwatching and nature interest around places like Northward Hill. The result is an unusual mix of maritime commerce, historic military sites and countryside living close to towns such as Rochester and the wider Medway conurbation.
