The Isle of Grain sits at the eastern tip of the Hoo Peninsula where the River Medway meets the River Thames, within the unitary authority of Medway in Kent. Much of the area is reclaimed salt marsh and mudflat, making it an important stronghold for waders and wildfowl, with nearby reserves such as Oare Marshes and Northward Hill noted for birdwatching.
Despite its wild edges, the Isle of Grain has a pronounced industrial and military history: 20th‑century refineries, a large power station and an LNG terminal reshaped the shoreline, and surviving defences like Grain Tower recall its strategic role guarding the estuary. Today the small local community reflects a mix of rural life, conservation interest and the lingering presence of heavy industry.
