Sheerness sits at the north‑west tip of the Isle of Sheppey, at the mouth of the River Medway where it opens into the Thames Estuary. It’s a working seaside town with a long shingle beach and promenade, overlooked by rows of colourful beach huts and within easy reach of salt marshes and nature reserves popular with birdwatchers.
Part of the borough of Swale in Kent, England, the town grew up around a Royal Navy dockyard established in the 17th century and still shows its military past in areas such as the Garrison and Blue Town. Today Sheerness combines a commercial port and light industry with a small town high street and community events, and is linked to the mainland by the Sheppey Crossing, making it a place where maritime heritage and everyday coastal life coexist.
