Halfway Houses is a small village on the east side of the Isle of Sheppey in the borough of Swale, Kent, England. It sits on the road linking Sheerness and Leysdown-on-Sea, hence the name, and sits close to coastal marshes and sandy bays that give the area a distinctly maritime and low-lying character.
The settlement grew as a stopping point for travellers and later as part of the island’s modest seaside and holiday economy; today it is largely residential with local shops, pubs and caravan parks nearby. The wider island’s history of shipbuilding and naval presence, notably at Sheerness and its former dockyard, still shapes local identity, while many residents commute to the Kent mainland via the Sheppey Crossing or work in nearby towns. Socially it feels like a close community with the mixed fortunes typical of small coastal villages.
