Olney is a small market town and civil parish in the unitary authority of Milton Keynes, historically in north Buckinghamshire. It sits beside the rural valleys that feed the River Great Ouse and is noted for a compact centre of Georgian and earlier buildings clustered around a traditional market square and the handsome parish church of St Peter and St Paul.
The town has a strong cultural pedigree thanks to the 18th‑century association with the poet William Cowper and the preacher John Newton, whose work is preserved at the Cowper and Newton Museum and in the celebrated Olney Hymns (including the origins of "Amazing Grace"). Olney is also famous for its annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race, and today functions largely as a lively local centre with independent shops, cafés and a commuter population, while drawing visitors for its history and surrounding walking country.
