Winteringham in North Lincolnshire is a small riverside village on the south bank of the Humber, not far from where the River Trent flows into the estuary. Its low-lying setting gives wide estuary views, saltmarsh and mudflat habitats that attract walkers and birdwatchers and lend the place a distinctly maritime character despite its quiet, rural feel.
The village has long roots - there is evidence of Roman and Anglo-Saxon activity and its name comes from an Old English personal name - and today life is largely centred on agriculture, a handful of local businesses and people who commute to nearby towns such as Scunthorpe or into the riverside centres around Barton-upon-Humber and across towards Hull. Community activity revolves around the parish church and village hall, and the old riverside harbour area hints at Winteringham’s historic role in local trade and ferrying.
