Ashington in Northumberland, England sits close to the River Wansbeck and within easy reach of the Northumberland coast and Newcastle. It began as a planned colliery town in the late 19th century, with long terraces and wide streets that reflect its industrial origins and the need to house a growing mining workforce.
Long dominated by coal, the town developed a strong community identity – it was home to the celebrated "Pitmen Painters" and to the Charlton brothers, two of England’s most famous footballers. Since the mines closed, the local economy has shifted to light industry, retail and commuting, and there have been steady regeneration and cultural projects aimed at celebrating the mining heritage while creating new jobs and community opportunities.
