Helpston is a small village and civil parish within the unitary authority of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, set on the rural edge of the Fenlands and the River Welland valley. The settlement retains a mixture of stone and thatch cottages and is surrounded by arable farmland, with many residents commuting to nearby towns or working in local agriculture and small enterprises.
It is probably best known as the birthplace of the poet John Clare, and his preserved childhood home, John Clare Cottage, draws literary visitors and local events; the parish church and community groups also maintain a strong sense of history and village life. That combination of literary heritage, historic buildings and countryside gives Helpston a distinctive cultural character within the broader Peterborough area.
