Great Casterton is a small Rutland village and parish in the south of the county, set beside the winding River Gwash and close to the market town of Stamford. Its setting on and beside the line of the old Roman road Ermine Street has left the area with visible archaeological interest, and the landscape around the village is a mix of arable fields and hedged lanes that invite walks into the surrounding Welland valley countryside.
The community retains a distinctly rural character: farming remains important, but many residents commute to nearby towns and cities. There are the usual village fixtures - a medieval parish church, a village hall and local pub - and the parish benefits from being close to grand country estates such as Burghley House, which help to draw visitors and enliven local cultural life while preserving a quiet, historic atmosphere.
