Martinsthorpe is a very small, almost deserted civil parish in Rutland, a few miles from the county town of Oakham. There is no obvious village centre today; the area is dominated by rolling farmland, lanes and a handful of farm buildings, giving it a quiet, rural character.
Its roots are medieval and you can still find earthworks and traces of earlier settlement, while the resident population is tiny and often counted with neighbouring parishes for administrative purposes. The landscape is valued for walking and birdwatching and the parish retains a strong impression of traditional Rutland farming and estate management rather than any bustling economic or social life.
