Smith's Wood sits in the north of the borough of Solihull, in the West Midlands, bordering Birmingham and the large council estate at Chelmsley Wood. The ward takes its name from a remnant of woodland and still benefits from parks and green spaces that give parts of it a semi‑rural feel amid suburban development.
Much of the area was developed as post‑war housing and remains largely residential, with local shops, community centres and schools such as Smith's Wood Academy. There have been ongoing regeneration and community‑led efforts to improve housing, facilities and employment, and while many residents commute into nearby urban centres there is also light industry and local enterprise nearby; the strong local voluntary sector and outdoor spaces are a notable social asset.
