Catcott is a small rural parish on the low-lying Somerset Levels, surrounded by drainage rhynes, peatlands and pasture. It sits among the other Level villages such as Shapwick and Westhay and is noted for the seasonal flooding of nearby Catcott Lows, a wetland reserve that attracts wildfowl and waders and is popular with walkers and birdwatchers.
Locally the economy is centred on farming and land management, with a stronger conservation and leisure focus in recent decades as peat extraction declined. The community is compact and village-centred, with an historic parish church and the sort of small social life and events typical of Somerset villages; its landscape and drainage history give the area a distinctive mixture of agricultural heritage and nature conservation interest.
