Ilchester is a small village and civil parish in Somerset, England, set beside the River Yeo and close to the market town of Yeovil and the wetlands of the Somerset Levels. It occupies an ancient crossing and is noted for its layered history: a Roman settlement with surviving archaeological remains, a medieval market and borough, and later a notorious parliamentary rotten borough abolished by the Reform Act of 1832.
Today Ilchester is largely rural, with farming, small local businesses and many residents commuting to nearby towns; the parish church and remaining earthworks and bridges reflect its long past and draw local historians and archaeologists. Community life is centred on village events and heritage conservation, so the place retains a strong sense of continuity between its Roman, medieval and modern chapters.
