Meare is a small village on the Somerset Levels in Somerset, England, lying a short distance west of Glastonbury. It occupies low‑lying peat and clay and sits close to the site of the former Meare Pool, a once‑extensive shallow lake whose drainage in the 17th century shaped the modern landscape and farming patterns.
Historically the village is notable for the medieval moated manor and fishponds used by the abbots of Glastonbury Abbey, remains of which can still be seen. Today Meare is largely an agricultural community, dominated by dairy and arable farming, with quiet tourism from visitors exploring the Levels and nearby Glastonbury; it retains a small‑village character and a number of historic buildings that reflect its long rural past.
