The village of Street sits on the southern edge of the Somerset Levels in Somerset, close to Glastonbury and the low ridge of the Polden Hills. Its name derives from the Old English for "street", reflecting a Roman road that once crossed the area, and the flat, drained marshland around the River Brue and surrounding peatlands shapes much of its landscape and flood history.
Street is probably best known for its association with the shoe makers C. & J. Clark; the company’s former factory site is now the outlet centre Clarks Village, which draws shoppers and supports local employment. The village also hosts notable educational and cultural institutions - including Millfield School, famed for its sporting provision, Strode College and Strode Theatre - giving the place a mix of industrial heritage, retail activity and an active community life.
