Tongham is a compact village and civil parish in the borough of Guildford, in Surrey, England, sitting close to the Hampshire border. Its setting on the edge of the chalk ridge known as the Hog's Back and within easy reach of towns such as Farnham and Aldershot gives it a pleasantly semi-rural feel: pockets of farmland and scrub, lanes and footpaths make it popular with walkers while nearby roads and rail links mean many residents commute to larger centres, including London.
Historically the community grew from agricultural roots and expanded with 19th- and 20th-century transport and local industry, and the influence of the nearby military garrison can still be seen in local patterns of employment and housing. Today Tongham mixes older cottages and village amenities with modern developments, small businesses and community events, retaining a quiet village character amid the commuter belt pressures of south-east England.
