Elstead is a compact village and civil parish in the borough of Waverley, set in the rolling countryside of Surrey. It sits beside the upper reaches of the River Wey and is notable for a picturesque shallow ford through the river; the parish is ringed by heathland commons, most notably Thursley Common and Hankley Common, the latter used for military training and occasional film work, which gives the area a wild, open character unusual so close to the capital.
The village has a strong sense of place, with a conservation area of timber‑framed and thatched buildings, a medieval parish church and a traditional village green that hosts local cricket and community events. The local economy remains largely rural - small shops, pubs and equestrian or agricultural activity - supplemented by commuters who travel into London or nearby market towns, keeping a mix of historic charm and modern links.
