Hindhead and Beacon Hill sit on the high ridge of the Surrey Hills within the borough of Waverley in Surrey, England. The landscape is dominated by heathland and pinewood, with the dramatic hollow of the Devil's Punch Bowl cared for by the National Trust; the A3 was routed into the Hindhead Tunnel in 2011, returning tranquillity to the ridge and improving walking routes and views.
The area has a colourful past - nearby Gibbet Hill recalls tales of highwaymen on the old coaching roads - and today it is a magnet for walkers, birdwatchers and day-trippers. Local life combines small shops and pubs, tourism-related businesses and commuters to London, and property values tend to be relatively high because of the scenery and easy access to the capital.
