Aldermaston is a rural civil parish in West Berkshire, England, set in the Kennet valley where the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal thread through farmland and woodlands on the edge of the North Wessex Downs. The waterways and countryside lend it a recreational character, with towpath walks, wildlife-rich meadows and a scatter of hamlets and village amenities.
Its modern identity has been shaped by the presence of the Atomic Weapons Establishment, a major local employer, and by its place in 20th-century protest history as the starting point for the anti-nuclear marches to London. At the same time the parish retains older layers of history - a medieval church, a historic manor and a canal wharf at Aldermaston Wharf - and good rail links from Aldermaston railway station to nearby centres such as Reading and Newbury.
