Basildon is a small, largely rural civil parish in West Berkshire, sitting on the chalk slopes above the valley of the River Pang and made up of the hamlets often called Upper Basildon and Lower Basildon. The landscape is a mix of farmland, woodland and rolling downland in the Berkshire Downs, and the striking 18th‑century house Basildon Park - now in the care of the National Trust and often seen as a film location - draws most visitors to the parish.
Historically the village has a medieval parish church and a character of small‑scale farming and country houses; today its economy and social life are shaped by agriculture, heritage tourism and a close‑knit village community with local events, walking routes and easy access to nearby centres such as Pangbourne and Reading. The parish remains quiet and genteel, popular with walkers and anyone interested in Georgian architecture and Berkshire countryside.
