Winsley in Wiltshire is a small village set on the slopes above the Avon valley, about two miles west of Bradford on Avon and a short drive from Bath. Its position above the River Avon and the Kennet and Avon Canal gives it a picturesque, walked-over landscape of towpaths, footpaths and limestone outcrops, with the canal and railway running through the valley below.
Historically the village grew around local stone-quarrying and small mill and textile activity in the 18th and 19th centuries, and many older Bath-stone cottages survive alongside later housing. Today Winsley is largely a commuter village for Bath and Trowbridge, but retains a strong community feel with local pubs, a primary school and active conservation groups that help protect its rural character and popular walking routes.
