Claverton is a small, largely rural village and civil parish on the south side of the River Avon, perched on the hills just outside Bath in Bath and North East Somerset. Its steep slopes give sweeping views across the Avon valley and the city, and the parish is crossed by the historic Kennet and Avon Canal, whose towpath and waterways are popular with walkers and boaters. The most famous local landmark is Claverton Manor, home to the American Museum in Britain, set in formal grounds and drawing visitors year-round.
The settlement retains a distinctly rural character with historic buildings and a compact community; early 19th‑century engineering survives at the nearby Claverton Pumping Station, which helped keep the canal supplied from the river. Economically the area is a mix of residential life for people who commute to Bath and small‑scale agriculture and tourism, and local conservation and heritage concerns play a strong role in village life.
