Bowling and Old Kilpatrick sit on the north bank of the River Clyde in West Dunbartonshire, with Bowling occupying the historic harbour and basin where the Forth and Clyde Canal meets the estuary. The basin and quay, long used for coal and limestone transhipment during the industrial era, have been partially restored and now form a focus for boating, walking and commuter life whilst the village retains a quieter, semi‑rural feel despite its proximity to Glasgow.
Old Kilpatrick is notable as the western terminus of the Roman Antonine Wall, with archaeological remains and interpretation that attract history‑minded walkers; to the north the Kilpatrick Hills provide popular local hillwalking and sweeping views over the Clyde towards Erskine and Renfrewshire. Both places reflect the shift from heavy industry on the Clyde to leisure, heritage and residential communities while keeping strong local identities tied to their maritime and Roman pasts.
