West Calder is a small town in West Lothian in the Central Belt of Scotland, set in low rolling countryside a short distance west of Edinburgh and close to larger centres such as Livingston and Bathgate. The town sits on the fringe of former industrial moorland and farmland and is within easy reach of the Pentland Hills, so it combines a semi-rural setting with good road and rail links into the central belt.
Historically West Calder expanded in the 19th century around coal and the Scottish oil‑shale industry, and that industrial past still shapes the town in the form of Victorian buildings, monuments and reclaimed industrial sites. Today it functions partly as a commuter town but retains a strong local identity, with active community groups, local shops, schools and regular community events; nearby villages such as Polbeth and Addiewell share in the area's industrial heritage and social life.
