The village and community of Argoed sits in the northern part of the borough of Caerphilly in south Wales, lying on the edge of the wooded slopes of the Sirhowy Valley close to Blackwood. Its name, from the Welsh for “by the wood”, hints at the semi-rural character: compact residential streets meet open countryside, with easy access to valley walks and green spaces.
Like many settlements here, Argoed grew up around the coal and iron industries and retains echoes of that industrial past in historic buildings and community memory. Today it is largely residential, with local shops, clubs and a strong community spirit, while many people commute to nearby towns or to cities such as Cardiff and Newport; outdoor amenities such as the Sirhowy Valley Country Park make it popular for walkers and families.
