Darran Valley is a small community in Caerphilly, Wales, tucked into the South Wales Valleys and made up of villages such as Deri, Pentwyn and Fochriw. The area is defined by steep valley slopes and former industrial landscapes that now mix pockets of woodland, housing and open spaces, giving a typical post‑industrial valley feel with convenient road links to nearby towns for commuting.
The community grew up around 19th‑ and early 20th‑century coal mining, and the closure of the pits reshaped the local economy and social life. Today a strong local identity remains, supported by a community council, village halls, schools and sports clubs; regeneration and grassroots projects aim to preserve the mining heritage while encouraging new businesses and leisure opportunities for residents.
