Nelson is an electoral ward and former colliery village in Caerphilly, set on the eastern edge of the South Wales Valleys. It grew rapidly in the 19th century with the coal industry and - like many valley communities - retains rows of terraced housing, former pit sites and open hillsides; the village was named in honour of Admiral Nelson. Its location keeps it within easy reach of larger urban centres such as Cardiff, making it part of a commuter belt while still feeling distinctly valley in character.
Socially and culturally the ward combines a strong local identity with the realities of post‑industrial change: community halls, social clubs and chapel traditions sit alongside regeneration projects that have turned former industrial land into green spaces and small business units. The local economy is mixed, with a blend of surviving small employers, retail services and residents who travel out for work, and community initiatives play a visible role in preserving heritage while encouraging new uses for old sites.
