Llanishen is a largely residential parish on the north side of Cardiff, Wales, whose name recalls the early medieval saint St Isan. Once a self-contained village, it expanded rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and now forms a suburban tile of streets, local shops and schools a few miles from Cardiff city centre; the parish church and some pockets of older housing still hint at its village origins.
The skyline is marked by the well-known Llanishen Reservoir, a Victorian waterworks that now functions as an important open space and wildlife corridor and has been the focus of local conservation and development debate. Today Llanishen combines commuter convenience with green amenity, a mix of small retail parades, community groups and easy road and bus links into central Cardiff, giving it a broadly suburban but locally active character.
