Whitchurch and Tongwynlais sit on the northern edge of Cardiff in Wales, combining suburban and village characters. Whitchurch is largely residential with many Victorian and Edwardian terraces, a busy local parade of shops and services, good schools and green spaces, and a strong commuter link into the city; parts of the area have seen significant redevelopment in recent decades, including reuse of former hospital and institutional sites into housing and community facilities.
Tongwynlais has a markedly different, more rural feel - a small village tucked into the Taff valley with woodland, steep hills and easy access to the Taff Trail and the River Taff. Its skyline is dominated by Castell Coch, a 19th‑century Gothic revival castle rebuilt on medieval foundations, which makes the area popular with walkers and visitors; locally there’s a mix of small businesses, a tight‑knit community spirit and many residents who commute into the city for work.
