Tongwynlais is a compact village on the northern edge of Cardiff in Wales, tucked where the wooded slopes give way to the start of the South Wales Valleys. The village sits alongside the River Taff and the dramatic Taff Gorge, offering easy access to countryside walks and sections of the Taff Trail, which makes it a popular spot for walkers and climbers while still feeling rural despite its proximity to the city.
Tongwynlais is perhaps best known for Castell Coch, the 19th‑century Gothic‑revival castle by William Burges that crowns the hill above the village. Historically the area expanded with quarrying and other small industrial activity in the Victorian era, but today it largely functions as a close‑knit community with local pubs, shops and events and many residents commuting into Cardiff for work.
