Ammanford sits in the heart of the Amman Valley on the banks of the River Amman, in eastern Carmarthenshire in southwest Wales. Nestled among rolling hills at the western fringe of the South Wales Coalfield, the town's landscape still shows the imprint of its industrial past while offering easy access to green walking country and views towards the surrounding valleys.
Originally a collection of hamlets that expanded rapidly as a coal-mining and railway centre in the 19th century (it was once known as Cross Inn), Ammanford has shifted towards light industry, local retail and commuting links with Swansea and Llanelli. It retains a strong Welsh-language and chapel culture, a lively community spirit reflected in local clubs and events, and a continuing interest in preserving its industrial heritage even as regeneration projects seek to broaden the local economy.
