Brynamman is a small former mining village tucked into the Amman Valley in Carmarthenshire, Wales, sitting on the eastern slopes of the Black Mountain with the River Amman running through the valley. The upland moors nearby link into the wider Brecon Beacons landscape, so it’s a handy base for hill walking and appreciating classic South Wales scenery.
Like many communities in the area, Brynamman was shaped by 19th- and 20th-century coal mining and the arrival of railways, and the long decline of those industries has left a legacy of industrial heritage and strong local community organisations. Part of the settlement lies across the administrative boundary with Neath Port Talbot, and today the village is noted for its Welsh-language culture, chapels, choirs and grassroots sports clubs alongside efforts at regeneration and promoting outdoor tourism.
