The communities of Cwmllynfell and Ystalyfera sit high in the Swansea Valley within Neath Port Talbot, Wales. Ystalyfera lies along the River Tawe and grew up in the 19th century around coal and tinplate works, while Cwmllynfell occupies more upland, pastoral ground at the western edge of the Brecon Beacons/Fforest Fawr uplands.
Today the area combines a strong local identity - Ystalyfera retains active clubs and community events, including a notable rugby club - with quieter, agricultural Cwmllynfell, where sheep farming, forestry and outdoor recreation are important; both villages attract walkers and those seeking rural life while remaining within reasonable commuting distance of Swansea and Neath.
