Betws-y-Coed is a compact village in the county borough of Conwy, Wales, sitting where the Rivers Conwy, Llugwy and Lledr meet and acting as a well-known gateway to Snowdonia (Eryri). Its Victorian-era growth, helped by the arrival of the Conwy Valley line, left a handsome mix of stone bridges, slate buildings and tourist facilities amid wooded river valleys and nearby Gwydir Forest.
Today Betws-y-Coed is largely driven by tourism and outdoor pursuits - walking, climbing, mountain biking and water sports - with galleries, craft shops and cafés catering to visitors; the village name, meaning “prayer-house in the wood”, hints at its medieval roots. There remains a strong local Welsh cultural presence, and balancing year-round community life with seasonal visitor pressure is a defining social and economic theme for the area.
